In 2009, after suffering years of running injuries, Steven Sashen was inspired by the book Born to Run to get out of his traditional padded, motion-control shoes and began running barefoot. This change naturally inspired a movement in his form that eliminated injuries and helped him become a Masters All-American Sprinter at age 45, after 30 years away from competition. Wanting to have this experience all day, every day, he started making sandals for himself and other local runners. And then, in November 2009, Steven and his wife Lena uttered those dangerous entrepreneurial words — “How hard could it be?” — and began selling DIY sandal kits out of their living room. Today, Xero Shoes is one of the world’s top natural movement shoe brands, with over 1 million customers in over 97 countries.
